FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—Lowell Observatory is proud to present the 2026 I Heart Pluto Festival, a four-day celebration honoring the discovery of Pluto and the enduring spirit of exploration that continues to define Flagstaff’s scientific community. From February 12–16, guests can enjoy a dynamic lineup of talks, activities, special events, and community partnerships that highlight Pluto’s legacy and its deep ties to northern Arizona.

The festival begins Thursday, February 12, with a dual event: the dedication of Ad Astra, this year’s Pluto-themed beer created by Mother Road Brewing Company, followed by a special edition of Astronomy on Tap. Beginning at 6 p.m., guests will hear from Mother Road’s team about the inspiration behind the brew before raising a toast to Pluto, Route 66, and Lowell Observatory. At 6:30 p.m., Astronomy on Tap welcomes Lowell Observatory’s Dark Sky Planetarium Specialist Stoker Stoker, presenting Cultural Icons: Pluto, Route 66, and How They Connect Us, an exploration of the surprising parallels between America’s most famous highway and the icy world at the edge of the solar system. Trivia and prizes round out the evening.

On Friday, February 13, the popular Pluto Pub Crawl returns from 6-9 p.m., featuring nine downtown Flagstaff venues. Each location will be hosted by a Lowell staff member or guest astronomer, offering participants a chance to enjoy local brews while learning about Pluto and its history.

The festival’s signature event, Night of Discovery, takes place Saturday, February 14 at the historic Orpheum Theater from 5–9 p.m. The evening opens with a VIP reception featuring meet-and-greets, poster signings, space art displays from the International Astronomical Artists Association, and telescope viewing through a 16-inch instrument built by Pluto discoverer Clyde Tombaugh. At 7 p.m., host Dr. Amanda Bosh, Executive Director of Lowell Observatory, will welcome the public program, which includes remarks from local leaders, partners, and community organizations. To purchase tickets, visit https://wl.eventim.us/event/i-heart-pluto/669647?afflky=OrpheumTheater.

The keynote program, sponsored by UniSource Energy Services, features an extraordinary lineup of speakers: Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA’s New Horizons mission and astronaut; Dr. Chad Trujillo, co-discoverer of the dwarf planet Eris; Andy Chaikin, acclaimed author of A Man on the Moon; and Dave Eicher, Emeritus Editor in Chief of Astronomy magazine, who will moderate the discussion. View from Mars Hill: Lowell Observatory to host “Night of Discovery” at Orpheum Theater on Feb. 14

2026 News, Blog, Event

View from Mars Hill: Lowell Observatory to host “Night of Discovery” at Orpheum Theater on Feb. 14

As posted on AZDailySun.com on 02/05/26.

Some of the most influential voices in planetary science and space-inspired culture will take center stage on Feb. 14 as Lowell Observatory hosts “A Night of Discovery,” the keynote event of Lowell Observatory’s 7th Annual I Heart Pluto Festival at the historic Orpheum Theater.

The evening’s featured speakers include Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA’s New Horizons mission and an astronaut; Andy Chaikin, acclaimed science journalist and author of A Man on the Moon, the definitive account of the Apollo missions and the basis of Tom Hanks’ “A Man on the Moon HBO series; and Chad Trujillo, planetary scientist at NAU and co-discoverer of the dwarf planet Eris, whose detection two decades ago reshaped Pluto’s classification. Dave Eicher, Emeritus Editor in Chief of Astronomy magazine, will moderate the panel.

At the center of the program is a wide-ranging conversation about Pluto and the outer solar system, from its past, its evolving scientific identity, and what the future may hold for the icy world that has captured public imagination for nearly a century.

Held in honor of Clyde Tombaugh’s historic discovery of Pluto in 1930, this I Heart Pluto Festival embraces a special theme: “Mother Road to the Stars,” recognizing the centennial of Route 66 and its surprising ties to Pluto’s story.

The evening will feature additional presentations that broaden the celebration beyond Pluto itself. Alice Bowman, Mission Operations Manager (MOM) for New Horizons, will present Lowell Observatory with a scale model of the spacecraft that transformed our understanding of Pluto in 2015. Arizona State Representative Justin Wilmeth, who championed the bill naming Pluto Arizona’s official state planet, will offer updates on his efforts to establish a spaceport in the state. Christopher Fox Graham, editor of the Sedona Red Rock News, will perform an original poem honoring Route 66 and its cosmic connections. Lowell Observatory historian Kevin Schindler will further explore the surprising relationship between the Mother Road and Pluto’s discovery.

Festival-goers can also browse space-themed artwork displayed throughout the Orpheum Theatre by members of the International Astronomical Artists Association, whose members blend scientific expertise with artistic vision. Outside, visitors can try their hand at axe throwing courtesy of FlagTagAZ, while inside they can enjoy a special Pluto-themed beer crafted by Mother Road Brewing Company.

For a hands-on astronomical experience, attendees will have the rare opportunity to view Jupiter through a 16-inch telescope built by Clyde Tombaugh himself, offering a direct connection to the man whose work inspired the festival.

The choice of venue is steeped in history. The Orpheum Theatre is where Clyde Tombaugh watched a movie on the night he discovered Pluto, making it a fitting and nostalgic setting for this celebration of scientific achievement and cultural heritage.

With its blend of science, history, art, and community, A Night of Discovery promises to be a highlight of this year’s I Heart Pluto Festival, n event that continues to honor the legacy of Pluto while inspiring new generations to look toward the stars.

Regular admission grants access to all activities, while a VIP ticket includes a private reception with presenters and a gift bag filled with Pluto and Route 66 memorabilia. For tickets, visit the Orpheum’s website. For information about other I Heart Pluto events. visit, https://iheartpluto.org/

From Route 66 to the Kuiper Belt: Meet the Stellar Lineup for the 2026 Night of Discovery

2026 News, Blog, Event

Mark your calendars for an out-of-this-world celebration on February 14, 2026! Lowell Observatory is proud to announce the return of A Night of Discovery at the Orpheum Theater. Held annually on the week of Clyde Tombaugh’s groundbreaking discovery of Pluto on February 18, 1930, this event serves as keynote event of the 7th Annual I Heart Pluto Festival.

This year, we are bridging two icons of exploration. Our 2026 theme, “Mother Road to the Stars,” honors the centennial of Route 66 and explores its fascinating, often overlooked connections to the distant, icy world of Pluto.

Here is your guide to the eminent space experts, storytellers, and dignitaries who will make this a night to remember.

Headlining Panel: The Past, Present, and Future of Pluto

The evening will be highlighted by a powerhouse panel discussion exploring our evolving understanding of the beloved dwarf planet that put Flagstaff on the map.

Dr. Alan Stern: Principal Investigator of the New Horizons Mission

Few people have done more to expand our view of the outer solar system than Dr. Alan Stern. As the driving force behind NASA’s New Horizons mission, which gave humanity its first close-up look at Pluto in 2015, Dr. Stern brings unparalleled insight into the geology, atmosphere, and mysteries of the Pluto system.

Dr. Chad Trujillo: Co-discoverer of Eris

Space history is full of twists, and Dr. Chad Trujillo had a hand in one of the biggest. He is the co-discoverer of the dwarf planet Eris, an object that sparked the global debate surrounding and eventual reclassification of Pluto 20 years ago. His presence guarantees a fascinating dialogue on how we define planethood in our galaxy.

Andy Chaikin: Award-Winning Science Journalist

To help weave the narrative of exploration and history together, we welcome Andy Chaikin. A celebrated author, Chaikin wrote A Man on the Moon, the definitive account of the Apollo missions which served as the basis for the Tom Hanks/HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.

Moderated by Dave Eicher: Emeritus Editor-in-Chief, Astronomy Magazine

Guiding this conversation is Dave Eicher. With decades of experience at the helm of Astronomy magazine, Eicher is well-equipped to navigate the history, the science, and the spirited debates surrounding these icy worlds.

Special Presentations: Art, History, and Legislation

A Gift from Mission Control

Alice Bowman, the Mission Operations Manager (or MOM, as she likes to be called) of the New Horizons Mission, will take the stage for a special ceremony in which she will present Lowell Observatory with a scale model of the New Horizons spacecraft. The display of this model at Lowell will highlight the enduring link between Flagstaff and the far reaches of the solar system.

The Future of Arizona Space

Arizona State Representative Justin Wilmeth returns to the Orpheum stage for the third year in a row, this time bringing updates on the future of local aerospace. Rep. Wilmeth, who famously authored the bill recognizing Pluto as Arizona’s official state planet in 2024, will discuss his current efforts to establish a designated spaceport right here in Arizona.

Route 66: The Mother Road to the Stars

To fully embrace this year’s theme, we will feature two unique performances:

  • Stoker Stoker, Lowell Observatory’s Senior Presentation Specialist, will take the audience on a journey through time, sharing the remarkable, intertwined history of Route 66 and the discovery of Pluto. Stoker is the creative force behind Cosmic Highways: A Centennial Tour, a new program at Lowell that treats visitors to an immersive presentation in the Lowell Universe Theater, followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of a rarely-seen private collections exhibit.
  • Christopher Fox Graham, Editor of the Sedona Red Rock News, will perform an original poem dedicated to the spirit of Route 66 and its space heritage. Graham has presented an original poem at the Night of Discovery event every year since the very first I Heart Pluto Festival in 2020.

Join Us for History in the Making

Doors open to the public at 6pm, with programs commencing at 7pm. General admission tickets, as well as a VIP option that provides access to a private reception at 5pm with the presenters prior to the main program, are available at https://wl.seetickets.us/event/i-heart-pluto-a-night-of-discovery/629870?afflky=OrpheumTheater

Makers and Menders is this year’s limited edition I Heart Pluto beer from Mother Road! This complex imperial porter was aged in a 50/50 mix of traditional and mesquite whiskey barrels and drinks like a black pilsner. The name and can design are an homage to the Sykes brothers, bicycle shop repairmen turned telescope dome designers who professed to be “makers and menders of anything.” The story goes that Percival Lowell was walking down Aspen street, saw their advertisement outside their shop, and basically said — “bet.” One of the Sykes brothers worked at Lowell until he retired! Nicole Stott Headlines I Heart Pluto Festival

2023 News, Blog, Event

By Kevin Schindler, Lowell Historian

As Lowell Observatory Director Jeff Hall has explained, the mission of Lowell Observatory can be distilled down to this – communicating science. Our scientists explore the universe and communicate their findings to colleagues around the world, while our educators share the excitement of this science with the public. A key ingredient of this effort is inspiration – the inspiration to wonder, the inspiration to learn, the inspiration to explore and discover.

The I Heart Pluto Festival’s signature event—the Night of Discovery—celebrates this very inspiration. And Astronaut Nicole Stott, keynote speaker of this year’s Night of Discovery, perfectly sets the tone.

A Florida native, Stott studied aviation administration and engineering management in college, graduating with a B.S. from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an M.S. from the University of Central Florida. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 2000, she twice lived on the International Space Station (ISS), spending a total of 104 days in space. Part of her training involved living undersea for 18 days on the Aquarius undersea research habitat. While on the ISS, she became the first person to paint in space and participated in the first live tweet-up from space.

During her time above—and below—the surface of Earth, Stott saw the world in a much different way. This galvanized her to a life’s mission of sharing her observations with people around the world in the hopes of inspiring them to wonder, explore for themselves, and be active stewards for the good of our home planet.

One of Stott’s most impactful—in fact, life-altering—experiences of space travel was gazing out the window of the ISS at Mother Earth, seeing the entire world from the outside as a tiny outpost in space. This “Earthrise Moment” (as first experienced by the Apollo 8 Moon mission in 1968), really struck Stott. Sure, she knew that we live on a planet, but to see that planet from space, with the knowledge that all life as we know it exists together on that tiny world, was eye-opening. From that vantage point, life on the planet is not male or female, black or white, Democrat or Republican, American or Chinese, or even human or non-human. We are all simply Earthlings, and we’re highly dependent on each other for survival. From that perspective, political and other contrived borders don’t matter. The only line that really matters to all life on Earth is the thin blue ribbon of our atmosphere.

Stott’s epiphanous Earthrise Moment, and subsequent observations from space, inspired her to take action and communicate the need to work together as Earthlings to take care of our fragile planet. For instance, she co-founded the Space for Art Foundation with the goal of “uniting a planetary community of children through the awe and wonder of space exploration and the healing power of art”.

Stott travels around the world (these days this travel is on, not above Earth) sharing her experiences from space, inspiring people young and old to be aware of the world around them and to actively take care of it. Don’t be a passenger on Spaceship Earth, she encourages, be a crew member.

Astronaut/aquanaut/space artist Nicole Stott is the keynote speaker for the Night of Discovery, the cornerstone event of the Fourth Annual I Heart Pluto Festival. The Night of Discovery takes place on February 18 at the Orpheum Theater. Doors open at 6pm and the program begins at 7pm. Afterward, Stott will sign copies of her book, Back to Earth.
